Emerging artists are in the early stages of their theatre practice following training and are seeking to create and / or present an independent work. Aspiring directors must possess some experience as assistant or apprentice director. Playwright applicants must have written at least one play that has been produced or has been the subject of a workshop.

Mid career artists have at least 5 years in professional theatre during which a playwright must have produced 2-5 plays that have been solicited for production rather than self-produced. Directors must have directed 2-5 plays.

Senior artists must have at least 10 years of professional theatre practice. A playwright will have had 6 or more plays produced and a minimum of one play published. Such a playwright will have achieved national or international recognition.
