artsnb announces changes to the Artist in Residence and Career Development programs’ deadlines

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Fredericton, February 10, 2026 The New Brunswick Arts Board (artsnb) announces upcoming changes to the Artist in Residence and Career Development programs’ deadlines, reducing their number from 6 to 3 yearly.

Effective May 1, 2026, the annual deadlines for these programs will alternate and be as follows:

  • May 1: Artist in Residence
  • July 1: Career Development
  • September 1: Artist in Residence
  • November 1: Career Development
  • January 1: Artist in Residence
  • March 1: Career Development

Over the past four years, the number of applications submitted to artsnb programs has increased by 50%, including for the Artist in Residence and Career Development programs. While this increase demonstrates the value of artsnb programs for artists, it also means additional workload for the artsnb team. The reduction in the number of annual deadlines for the Artist in Residence and Career Development programs is intended to streamline and optimize the workload of artsnb staff during busy periods, while continuing to maintain the turnaround time for programs evaluation deadlines to meet the needs of artists’ careers.

artsnb Artist in Residence program

The Artist in Residence Program is intended for individual artists to participate in residencies and New Brunswick organizations to host professional artists, and enable them to pursue specific projects relating to their creative work. The artists in residence are also to contribute to the promotion and understanding of the arts by means of the artists’ contact with the clientele of the establishments. More information on this program is available on this page.

artsnb Career Development program

The Career Development program is designed to recognize and encourage arts professionals who have demonstrated exceptional artistic talent and potential, and who are pursuing a career in the arts. The program is divided in three (3) components: 1- Arts by Invitation is to present work by invitation, 2- Professional Development is to pursue studies, workshops, training, or mentorships in the arts, and 3- Professionalization and Promotion is to assist artists to produce tools related to the promotion of their work and career. More information on this program is available on this page.

The New Brunswick Arts Board is an arm’s length arts funding agency with a legislated mandate to facilitate and promote the creation of art as well as administering funding programs for professional artists in the province. Funding for these programs is provided through the Arts Development Trust Fund, which benefited from an increase in 2024, and by the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture. The department also allocates dedicated funding to the Artist in Residence program, as a response to the recommendations from the report of the Premier’s Task Force on the Status of the Artist.
